Interesting article about the old fleet of American airborne refueling tankers and plans to replace them in the future:

Continuation of the big fiasco about giving the contract to build new tankers to AirBus and not Boeing, which fell apart and we still have this problem.

I was a KC-135R Dedicated Crew Chief for the USAF. Never has that aircraft failed to the point of coasting lives. The 2A5x1gs that work on it are a hard working group of guys. The make the best of an old aircraft and and troubleshoot diagnose repair problems faster than most know they are there.
I love the KC-135 and wish to never see it go, but Progress is a coming. |

Air Frame, no
Major system components, yes Many structural pieces have been updated with the times and every bell and whistle is there when it comes to communications and avionics, APU, Hydro, just about everything short of the ribs. Its just an old bird. I hear about the Tankers a lot, but what about the RC-135s, JSTARs, or E-3s? They are all built in mid fifties to late sixties. Yet I have not heard of a replacement even being sought after. |

It's not like these are high performance air frames -- they're meant to last a very long time. If the Air Force could get its head out of its butt and replace the thing, that would probably be good, but at the same time I think it's clear that it's not actually an immediate necessity.

a shame really as it often seems that the american defense program is based on who has the most "favours" rather than what is best suited to the job.
what about the 767 airframes, i believe the japs use them for AEW and tanking. |

I live next to a base that maintains and operates these planes...hope the next planes are quieter because the current ones shake my house when they fly to low....

Modern turbofans are more efficient with higher thrust, so the vibrations you experience will be higher, most likely. There's always the chance they settle for a high-efficiency, low-thrust engine though. It is a transport aircraft after all. | |
