If so, I would definitely choose the Roman Army, for three reasons.

One, they laid the groundwork for most of the elements of today's armies, like supply and logistics caravans, intense basic training (including the ambiguous Drill Sergeant), combined arms warfare with the incorporation of artillery (catapults), skirmishers, and cavalry.

Two, they conquered over half of Europe, taking on forces several times their size and winning due to superior tactics and equipment. (Although the size of enemy forces would eventually be their downfall, too.)

Three, they defeated the Carthaginians in what could easily be described as a "World War", raging from the Middle East, to North Africa, to Central Europe, and finally the gates of Rome. Some pretty epic battles took place in the Punic Wars. You'd have to look at WWI to see battles with the same enormous number of soldiers in them.

Anyways, yeah, I guess this was supposed to be modern militaries, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

Yeah the romans were pretty badass, even though I think it was a dick move to steal the greek's religions and just rename the different gods, but they were pragmatists, so you gotta give them creds for seeing that this was the smart move to make at the time.

We complain that we have troops in the Middle East, hell they are over there every day!

Yeah, I would certainly agree with you on that.

Israel is a tiny country, population-wise and physically, and it's surrounded by large, rich, and militarily powerful Arab countries.
There are over 1 billion Muslims in the world, and just over 20 million Jews.
Talk about numerical inferiority.

But twice Israel was attacked by a massive coalition of Arab nations, and twice it completely destroyed their armies and claimed chunks of their land in return.
They even repelled an invasion that started on Yom Kippur!

That would be like if the US was invaded by Russians, Chinese, and North Koreans on Christmas day and we still defeated them.

If we can go back in history as some here has done, i will in general deploy my votes on the Legions of Rome, Hanibals Army, Napoleons The Great Army, and finally the Preussian Army.

But all of the above votes are from pure millitray perspectives.

Today...hm, today political and civilian perspectives as minimum must be included, to me at least, so, hm... need to think on this one, before deploying my favorites?
