Getting back on topic, I read a article on how the M1 Abrams may be the United States last Main Battle tank. It talked alot on the lines of implementing ATGMs and other heavy anti-tank weapon systems to smaller, faster, lighter vehicles. Now, to be honest, you're probably not gonna have a very high success rate by going in, Attacking, messing up, than running away. Tanks today were made to take hits from others, and should continue to show that role in the United States Military.

If you're looking it in terms of future MBTs, than they're going either two ways. Heavier, or lighter. Heavier as in being heavier, thicker armor, as well as larger cannons. Or lighter by using composites, advanced materials, or just rethinking things from square 1, which the Abrams has done in its design.

Until then, we should see how the M1A3 should do for our forces. Hopefully it'll integrate more technologies than the current M1A2 and its improvement upgrades.
hmmm good point I think the US Army is trying to go lighter but at the same time trying to advance their armor so it is stronger than the current M1 Abram armor.....

Oh yea, I finally found an old old thing I remembered seeing on the Discovery channel. Haven't heard anything about it since so I assume it was scrapped along with many other projects like the Comanche and such.

I don't care how "advanced" they claim that monstrosity to be; it is God damn fugly!

Just thinking about those "things" replacing the M1 makes me want to vomit profusely.

Wrong way round, they cause problems with fin stabalised sabot rounds, which is why British CHARM rounds have a special anti-spin collar to make sure they work correctly.

Anyway, these are all very impressive, the British are the only ones with invisible tanks!

Seriously though, sauce

So I read that article and about the whole lighter armor thing....does this mean the new abrams will be less armored than the other ones? Will the new model sacrifice armor protection for speed and being less heavy or is the US military going with lighter and stronger armor?

also with the whole 2 man stealth tank, is it just me or does the crew look like they are not protected at all.... I like the shape of the turret to deflect the enemy tank rounds firing at them but when it would hit the turret the crew is right under there... they would be killed, sure the tank is still there but no crew to operate it

Looks like they played a lot of Battletanx and thought to themselves "How can we make our next generation of tanks look like an N64 game?".
