Are there any other reasons why they requested a new SAW apart from the weight and closed-bolt?
Edit: Or like Zrix said, whats so special about it? It looks like a normal HK417. |

They replace an LMG with a high ROF and large ammo capacity with a 30 round 5.56 AR. Why not just hand the guy an M16/M4 like the rest of the squad?
Edit; mkay, googling about a little it apparently has a longer and more heavy duty barrel, and uses open bolt. But still? |

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

was going to post about same as bob, isnt it something like RPK-74M with rails and mag, which has less capacity and seems like less barrel length than RPK? while i read lots of complaints about it and that squad leaders will take PKM/PKP over RPK into squad anyday

High-capacity magazine may signal demise of SAW - MarineCorpsTimes.com
A high-capacity magazine is in development as well, so that should alleviate that problem. |

S-Mags have been around for a fair while, but from what I've seen have always been somewhat unreliable (either the mag itself or the weight of it damaging/straining the rifle it's mounted on), wonder how FN and Armatac are getting around this problem.
Also wonder if the adoption of the 416-based rifle could indicate a potential leaning for the Marines to adopt one as their main rifle in the near-mid future, it'd certainly help out logistically if all models were of the same family (though the G36 did kinda try that with all the variants inc. MG36, which didn't work out perfectly). |
