Not completely certain what happened but version I heard was the missile detached from the wing pylon when the F18 caught the arrestor wire and skipped off down the deck. Unknown if the motor kicked in or not..

would the accident at the french military show where they accidentally loaded live ammo into one of the guns count as a negligent discharge? or is that sheer dumb-EXPLICATIVE-ery?
