A few sniper pals have told me semi-automatic rifles weigh slightly less every time you fire a shot, meaning tiny adjustment to the position of the weapon after each shot which can lea to inaccuracies.

Wouldn't the same be true of bolt-action weapons though? Most use box mags and fire similar weight/size rounds to their semi-automatic counterparts. Also, that doesn't necessarily make a whole lot of sense in the first place -- if the scope is sighted in, you're aiming at the same spot each time, and the only effect it would have would be slightly greater muzzle climb before the bullet exited the barrel (if the muzzle climb even takes effect that rapidly).

I think it is more to do with the lightening of the magazine each time making for a different corrected point of aim after each shot. My apologies is should have said "semi-auto compared to single shot bolt action"

I was also under the impression that a reason snipers prefer bolt action is that the spent casing doesn't go flying into the air once they've fired. They can cycle it out slowly and not allow the glinting casing to give away their position.

Bolt action is like driving with a stick shift perhaps?

this discussion makes me think of this video.
i'd personally prefer a semi-auto cause it's easier to keep on target after each round. i wouldn't take jamming into account with these modern rifles since i'd probably clean it more often than my d**k. | |||

I'm confused -- I don't think any modern force uses a single-shot bolt-action rifle anymore. They all have box mags. That was the point I was trying to make above.

I thought it was because semi-auto rifles push gas around and cycle the bolt while the bullet is still leaving the barrel, whereas with a bolt action rifle, there is a bare minimum of movement in the rifle until you cycle the bolt, long after the shot is gone.

What about irregular forces? Would it be more feasible if someone constructed a bolt action rifle, which was more accurate and had more hitting power, than your conventional assault rifle?
