Thread title changed for accuracy. The SA80's daddy is the Armalite/Sterling AR-18 which the British army decided not to adopt, then copied, put into a bullpup configuration and broke.

And then the government closed down the Sterling factory in Essex.

Ive heard that alot... AR18 doesnt look anything like SA80.





You can actually see that there is some heritage from the EM2 though.

The action of the SA80 series, the actual worky bits of the weapon, are based on those of the AR-18 (and several were incorrectly copied which may or may not have lead to some of the problems with the original A1, if information I've seen is to be believed).

The story goes that the proprietor of the Sterling Armaments UK company was attending an arms fair in the late 70s or early 80s and was having a poke around what was slated to be the Army's wonderful new assault rifle (him, of course being somewhat unhappy with the Army's decision to decline the offer of adopting the AR-1. Upon examining the weapon he noted serveral of the parts had been copied incorrectly from the AR-18 (without licence and without consulting Sterling about how one might go about making something with an AR-18 type action).

Whether or not this was before H&K finding out that it goes off if one drops it or a certain Mr. Kalashnikov's remarks about how Britian must have some very clever soldiers, I am unsure.
