Default Brit carrier deals inked at last

Brit carrier deals inked at last | The Register

Looks like the Carriers are finally about to be built - Ive linked to my favorite defence hacks opinion as he always gives an alternative and informed take on these things. If they do come in at £2 billion each Ill be shocked. Considering we will end up paying nearly £ 200 million for each eurofighter in service they seem pretty good value ( though I presume the £2 billion for the carriers doesnt include aircraft? )

£2bn is only 10 Eurofighters so I guess it's without

Still, not a bad price.

According to TheTimes, the JSF that are to go on the carriers (Once they have been completed) will cost 12 billion pounds, for 36 x 2 JSF aircraft = 72. Extract:

In addition to the £3.9 billion, another £12 billion will be spent on providing the ships with Joint Strike Fighters - 36 on each.
Daymn?

£2bn a piece may sound a lot, but the first G R Ford class carrier for tha Americans will be £4bn, and carries 75+ planes, so when you compare it to that it is cheap.

What about the cost of the JSF? e.g. 12 billion pounds... for 72 aircraft .

12bn for 72 is £166m each, a lot of money but a lot of plane.

Spacemanc, where did you get your figure of £200m each for the Eurofighter? Wiki says it's only £61.5m...Though knowing the MoD's penchant for buying things at double the price, you may be right.

I said nearly £200 million per aircraft in service
In the post above is a link to a very interesting article that explains it. Basically if Tranche 3 of eurofighter goes ahead soon, then most of the Tranche 1 jets ( that have just gone into service ) will be mothballed.
The whole program will have cost the UK taxpayer £25 billion for 140 jets in service which works out at £ 180 million each - great value eh? Another way of looking at it would be that every single UK taxpayer has personally paid £ 1000 towards the Eurofighter project

EDIT I may be wrong on the £1000 per taxpayer bit - Im sure that out of our population only around 25 million actually pay income tax . And having just typed that made me realise, everyone gets screwed by the all the other taxes, so probably not really a fair statement for me to make.

Isn't that a bit much though. The god damn planes combined cost more than the 2 carriers put together.

A carrier's a bit useless without things to carry.

It's like buying a car; you go into the showroom wanting a car and come out with a list of options as long as your arm. Nothing's any good without the accessories to go with it
