Why M4 for the US army?

I was curious as to why the US Army mainly uses the M4 for its soldiers. Does any other army in the world mainly use a carbine? im not 100 percent sure about this, but i always heard the m4 didnt have the best range or stopping power, due to its short barrel and small caliber bullet. so i wondered why the army chose it over the m16a4. i know the m4 must be great to use inside buildings and whatnot, but at long ranges like in afghanistan it must not be that great. dont flame me for ignorance please ive never owned or fired an m4 in my life.

Because theres nothing fundamentally wrong with the M4.
FYI, IDF also uses M4[A1] as main rifle for the regular infantry units.

I thought it was requested for places like Iraq, but afghan US soldiers still still use the m16.

*My opinion is only based on images from the war zones.

Probably because the M4 is more:

  • Lighter - Since infantry tends to carry alot of gears.

  • Shorter - Which is a great deal for house to house fighting, and for crewmen.

  • Maneuverability - Lightweight and short size allows the soldier to have a quick reflex.

The m4 is used in Afghanistan as well. The myth that the difference between the m16 and the m4 at range is so pronounced as to make it more desirable in afghanistan is just that, a myth. They both suck equally.

Only 1 brigade out of 5 uses TAR-21, while 3 others use M4 and only 1 uses M16 variants.

Lighter
Maneuverability

|L85A2 does all these things as its a bullpup but still has greater accuracy

I loled

Isn't the real reason the M4 was chosen that Colt Firearms has a practical monopoly on the US armed forces contracts? afaik its stoppage rate is far more than its competitors weapons, from H&k etc.

then again, the extendible stock etc would be useful

No one is talking about the L85...

But yeah, as said shorter/lighter/etc. and from what I hear the accuracy difference really isnt much.
