Re: Trophy "Force Field"
The Russian developed a primitive version a decade ago. If you place this in context, it is really not that impressive becuase compact radars have been carried by Fighter Aircraft since WW2 and such radars have been connecting to all manner of weapons fire control systems since WW2 aswell. Lancaster's had something called "village Inn" - 4 - 0.303 MGs linked to a radar - enabling gunners to track and shoot at enemy planes in the dark.
Trophy is really just compact radar linked to a gun but instead of shooting other aircraft, it shoot missiles and rockets. It is and the Times would get bear cr*ap from its readers if it wasnt. See Electric reactive near bottom of the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosi...eactive_armour It says high elevation but not total strait up protection. Therefore any advanced guided missile that has an top down attack mode might be able penetrate the shield flying almost vertically down, or if not, with some minor modifications. Future missiles could also be designed to consist of 2 separating sections, where they detach shortly before active protection system fires, so when the protection system fires, it hits the first section of the missile, destroying it but leaving the 2nd section (which contains all the explosive and propellant) to to hit the vehicle. Although i am sure Active Protection system could extend area they cover to include vertical axis and mabey, to counter the double part missile, fire twise at an incoming missile, to take out both 1st and 2nd part of a missile. And so the cycle of developing better armour to counter new weapons, then better weapons to counter the new armour continues on........ |

1 Grab a SAW
2 Find the highest hill/building around a flag 3 Move there, stay there, Spot, call out, attack marker... SAW! 4 For god sake go from high ground to high ground! NOT bottom of a valley to open field to gully! |

Re: Trophy "Force Field"
the US Army features this as part of the Future Combat System (FCS)
point defence systems have been in the works for ages, very cool system. |

Re: Trophy "Force Field"
Good stuff, they could put that on aircraft as well for AA missiles.

What bollocks. That video is so misleading. All the force field talk is rubbish.
They just use that to represent the kill radius of the protection system against incoming projectiles. the missile dont impact on an "invisible wall". People are so gullible IT DOESN'T EXIST -----> you can see the trophy system firing as the rpg nears the dome. It detects incoming projectiles and triggers the unit mounted on that side of the vehicle to fire. The projectiles shred hte incoming missile rendering it harmless/predetonating. big issue - it can't be reloaded, so concentrated attacks on one aspect of vehicles leaves them exposed. so R&D are looking ata missile based system as improvement. Trophy has been adopted by IDF already on their merkavas. It isn't anything new, the Russians had Arena and Drozd since the 80's war in afghanistan. Like with ERA, it is hazardous for accompanying troops for obvious reasons. Quote:
When you turn this to AA missiles that are capable of mach3+....it will eat up the 200yd engagement range much too fast.

now before you start throwing dirt at this system consider the option. having a 100% chance of getting hit by a missile to a lets say 50% chance. Which one would you choose? BTW does anyone here think you can kill a tank with an AA missile?
