Cold fusion ?
Who knows what the post-petroleum future will bring.
If we need to rely on batteries then conflicts will be much more limited but necessity is the mother of invention.

The problem isn't running out of oil, its when we reach peak oil, or when the global production of oil maximizes. However, the military is probably the one thing that doesn't need to worry about oil at all, they have the government backing them. You look at Tsarist Russia, you look at North Korea, their populations starved and (sometimes) the military, but they had the government supporting them. The problem is the populations of those countries who depend on oil. If I were to guess, eventually the demand for an alternative will become so massive that it will be more profitable for companies to sell those instead of their current vehicles. Markets economies have their advantages.

Someone is going to invent the car all over again and will become very rich. But, supposing that there is a major recession, while countries such as the US and the EU may be able to manage, developing countries who simply cannot afford to modify their means of transportation and production, may be a source of serious instability.

Well fossil fuels are simply finite resources until we find a way of accelerating the transition from plants and another crap to oil.

Vehicles would have to rely on alternative fuels, biofuels and alternative energy production. This would be interesting if we did switch completely to this- our interest in the affairs of the middle east may quickly diminish. The problem ofc as our South American friends have pointed out that biofuels will decrease food production and possibly cause hunger in LEDCs, which history has shown can cause conflict.

The only thing I see changing (baring the use of futuristic weaponry ofc) is aircraft, can high performance military helos and jets operated using alternative fuels?

Not the ones we have now, but hell theres probably people with higher IQ's who get paid a lot more than the entire forum put together. And if history is any lesson, when people need to kill each other, they'll find a way.
