Thats some nice hysterical reporting right there.

It was probably something stupid, like one of the tracks got stuck so it started to turn.

It said the exact same thing because that site lets people post links to articles just like PR forum, and they posted a link to the same story.
We all make mistakes [R-CON]CAS_117 - I wont laugh at you buddy.

PS "SPREAD THE TRUTH!!!!" are you implying that the story is not true? yes hes put an amusing slant on it, but that is what the register does on all their stories.

Heres the Popular Mechanics article that most of the information was taken from

Sigh, here we go with the Osprey bashing again...

There were no "computer error" crashes of the Osprey. There was one incident where an uncommanded acceleration of one engine resulted in a bird on the ground start to take off then quickly drop back down and resulted in damage to the bird, but no deaths.

Considering that there have been 4 crashes of Osprey (last one was in 2000), that is carries a crew of 4 plus 19 Marines, only killing 30 is not that bad. Of the 4, 3 could have been prevented if the crew had followed the written instructions provided by the manufacturer (AKA they were directly or indirectly caused by human error).

Other planes with notable crashes during development: The F-14 had its 1st crash on its 2nd flight. The F-117 was so bad the crew nicknamed it the Wobblin Goblin with at least 3 going splat before deployment. Approximately 1/3rd of all the AV-8 Harriers ever built have already crashed, earning the nick of "Scarrier." Early in their developement the F/A-18 earned the nickname "Lawn Dart" due to its tendancy to return to earth nose first.

Simple fact is that all new aircraft will have accidents. The Osprey is damned in this respect by 2 factors: 1) Its a completely new bird which we had to learn how to fly and 2) It carries lots of people w/o ejection seats which has been a saving grace on most other birds.

Fear the Moo!!!
