Was a good aircraft but they were getting a little too expensive to maintain. Just like the F-14's. But at least we have something better to look forward to

I feel like this was talked about in an F-22 thread. Anyhow, seems an excellent idea to me, as the first F-22 squadron was just made operational (I believe?), and I do think it's a good idea to keep them deployable in case they are needed before the F-22s fill their role.

A good end for a next generation fighter.

Yes, its a bomber, the reason they called it a fighter was because...hmmm.... yea.... why? Obviously it had to do with the perception of the public, but what exactly... avoid confusion? questions as to why you would want 2 different types of bombers costing a load of cash?

According to a couple of sources I've read, there's never been an official explaination.

Googling "F-117 why F designation" will bring up a bunch; some are more trustworthy than others but it's an interesting one to read up on.
