Pariel, they said the fireball was due to small fragments of the projectile igniting from air resistance.

That makes more sense, especially coming off the rails. Now that I think about it, there's still gonna be a giant fireball everytime they fire one of these things, because of the friction between the rails and the sabot/conductor.
