A picture of the damage done; the site that came from says that the warhead was 3.2 kilograms (approximately 7 pounds for the rest of you in America).

Apparently, it being fired? Maybe it was going fast enough to compress and ignite the air around it, although that seems highly unlikely for a projectile that small, going that slow.

Moment of impact...

Well, not really. It just necessitates different design features. An EMP destroys electrical circuitry by delivering a sudden burst of electrons through the circuits, resulting in high temperature/charge/energy in the circuit, causing something to break. The way to stop it is just to insulate it better. So, if you just find a nice insulator (ie: ceramics, plastics), you can harden just about anything fairly cheaply. I don't know for sure, but I'd bet the Navy already hardens/has hardened most of its ships against EMPs already.

I guess that's it from me; I find this stuff pretty interesting, at least physics-wise, hence all the crap.

Pariel, they said the fireball was due to small fragments of the projectile igniting from air resistance.

Not quite. There have been some pretty powerful railguns made by hobbyists.
To the best of my knowledge, only a few people have ever managed cold fusion,
and their results were never sucessfully reproduced.

While I cannot deny that it is somewhat impressive, I have been expecting the military to adopt a railgun for some time now. Those were some pretty awsome pictures though. Was the projectile going so fast that the debris were just ignited by friction?

Yes. At least, according to the article.

US Navy demos railgun

I don't know if this is for general technology discussion or only PR related
things. Please remove if it does not fit.

Anyway, the US Navy is testing railguns for engagement distances of more than
200 nautical miles.

See here for the news and a video:
EETimes.com - Navy demos railgun to fire projectiles 250 miles

This design specification is included in the above article:
http://www.onrglobal.navy.mil/railgu...ecordEvent.pdf

I hope someone finds this interesting.

Thanks for clearing things up, but that's obviously not my fault then.
Should've been in the technology thread from the start.

Actually, it was in the MilTech forum already

It's just the OffTopic forums, on the default settings, hide any topics that haven't been used in the last 24/48 hours (I forget which), in order to reduce the amount of spam threads visible.

Often a topic will have been discussed before (and often quite recently), but the thread isn't viewable unless you select "Show topics from: (the past 2 weeks)" from the bottom of the forum section window, and then search through the several pages of threads.

So, the easiest way to check if something's been posted before is to search, doable in two ways:

1) Use the forum's inbuilt search function; available at the top of every page (next to "Quick Links" and "New Posts", underneath "MEDIA").

2) Use Google, in the following format:

"You Keywords" site:www.realitymod.com

e.g.: "rail gun" AND "Navy" site:realitymod.com
