Does anybody have links to the more technical aspects of this experiment, like what material they used for the rails or how the recoil behaved? Also, what was the power usage? Do they honestly believe they'll be able to generate this on a ship?

They honestly believe that in 15 years, someone will figure out that problem for them

It does seem farfetched, and a bit unnecessary, but uber-cool.

Although I must ask: Why are we spending millions to develop a railgun when our allies are complaining about having enough choppers to manage international deployments?

Mine did.
You're surely in a good mood today, smartass.

Ships are floating nuclear reactors, at least the larger ones are. I don't think power is a major concern.

Is anybody else not excited that the battleship/battlecruiser is going to be making a comeback in the next few decades? Granted, its roles are changed, but still, bad ass.

Producing that much power on a ship is one of the primary problems with the practicality of rail guns. Think about how much energy has to be transferred to the projectile in how little time.

(Power = Energy / Time)

now we just need to get a big enough EMP bomb and all of USA's ships will be nothing more than floating iron

Not if they figure out a way to cause electrical flotation.

Then they'll be sinking iron.
