SA80 Mod?
What is the thing above the UGL, fixed to where the gas parts are, on this SA80?
http://www.militaryimages.net/photop...a/532/SA80.jpg Is it a torch? Because I have seen a lot of British soldiers with this on their SA80's, but I'm not sure what it is. Thanks |

Useful for room clearing, gives you the edge being able to illuminate areas in an instant and hit the trigger where necessary.
Prior to having this addon when you cleared rooms in a FIBUA (fighting in built up areas) situation by switching to full auto, and as you cleared rooms in pairs you would fire a 2-3 round burst off into all areas of each room you went into that looked like they might contain an enemy. (SA80 series generally squirts off 2 rounds per pull of the trigger in full auto mode, 3 rounds when using blanks as rifle fires "faster" then, then theres always the two fabled factory gas parts settings to take into account) It was said in the early 1990's that it would take the entire British Army (130,000 fighting troops, 140,000 support troops) to clear a city the size of York (140,000 residents) FIBUA style. Interesting to note my training didn't cover civilians cowering in those areas! But then I was only TA, so I guess that page wasn't reached by my trainers (who were ex-regulars) The addition of this addon enables you to minimise civilian casualties I reckon so far from being some L33t addon, it becomes a most useful tool to prevent accidental civilian deaths and that is always a good thing!!! Remember, historically, before the advent of night vision equipment and handy addons the modern british army is world renowned for choosing to fight at night and being most successful in that environment. |

A flashlight on Bi Ming would just let people see you a long way off, it wouldn't be particularly useful.
But that infantryman has a ton of gear there--two optics, L85 with UGL and flashlight--he's starting to look like a US Marine. Also, what is he doing with the NVGs during the day? |
