Stryker, you seriously need to work on finding references. You can spout whatever you want, but without something to back it up there's no point in saying it.

Anyhow, I don't know how much I believe the SAM commander's report, as it is to his benefit to say "oh, we tweaked our radar in a supersecret way", rather than "yeah, we're not idiots and if you put enough explosives in the sky you're bound to hit SOMETHING". Given, the F-117 could be spotted by radar, especially if that radar is tweaked with knowledge of the F-117s stealthing techniques, but I doubt they had that. My guess is a lucky shot, combined with visual spotting and high volume of fire. Also remember that the SA-3 GOA that was used to shoot down the F-117 has a backup optically tracked mode, meaning that if the aircraft was visually spotted then it would be possible to shoot it down without radar within 25 km of the launcher.

Wow, your radar used electromagnetic waves huh? Must be much better than everyone elses. Oh wait...that's exactly what radar is. Sounds like a BSer trying to make his story sound better than it is. Probably the radar was stationed near the F-117 ingress route, aircraft was identified visually, and engaged with visually guided SA-3. Given that we know the US planners used the same ingress route repeatedly, and that the SA-3 can be visually guided, this seems much more plausible to me than "we modified our radar to pick up the F-117, but no one else knows how".

It is well known that the flight planning was sloppy before the F-117A was hit and it is widely believed that their SA-3s had low-light optics or low light electro-optical systems. I am not making stuff up.

Thats very true, we may never hear about the classified successful missions this thing has been on, as it is a stealth penetration strike aircraft.

Oh and you also have to realize that the battery that took out that aircraft was completely dedicated and desperate to take it down, as they launch multiple SAM's at it.

That was more of an accident stryker. And as for your info, I tend to believe you, I just am a firm believer in good sources first and foremost. Also, a good source outdoes a good argument any day.

I don't really see the reason for using the f-117. F-22's can do the same thing and it's going to be cheaper to maintain only 1 aircraft instead of 2.

And where did you hear that they are still using the sr-71?
