New Iranian All Terrain Vehicle

meet the Safir

YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Some specs:

- All steel chassis
- Moves in water up to 80 CM high
- 1/4 tonne (metric)
- Low fuel consumption
- Built for Iran's climactic characteristics

There'll be 5000 of these produced yearly. I read somewhere else that a bigger 3/4 tonne version is also on its way.

I must say I was taken aback by that suspension. It's going all over the place and taking on the rocks and the ditches like a champ.

But I've no off-roading experience. So I like to hear the opinions of others.

Truefully, this is not pertinent in military technology.

It looks like a bit of a backwards track for technology that our brethren at Land Rover have pioneered for the last few decades. I don't understand how they are proud of what looks like one of those electric cars that babys sit in.

As an avid 'off roader' I must state that at 1:07 it was flailing as if ataxia had been a trait the designers had planed for a constituent part of the vehicle. Trust me on this but at 1:25 you would expect to be going over landmines the way the body was rolling, I had a situation when I was in a Land Rover 110 when we where fording the Oliphants river in South Africa, we where axle high in water (which degrades any steering ability) and going over rocks larger than that without the role that this vehicle has shown. At 1:31 it shows us the suspention is too firm (or the chassis was not designed for the environment) and can barely power itself over the small rocks.

Prepare for broken teeth.

the year is 2007, Iran has now successfully copied a vehicle from the 40s.

[TT]engineer: Wow, camo that doesn't look like the designers took a dump on a piece of canvas and shouted "BRILLIANT!".

It was bouncing around a lot, and with empty weapons (or weapon mockups). Put any kind of weight in that and you're going to need to push it out.

If I had made that in my backyard it would be impressive. If an industrial nation puts this forth as a new and praiseworthy product, they're misguided.

Actually, I've seen these in commercials. They're for jeep, they show it bouncing across the moon and at Woodstock. But that was 40 years ago.

Yeah it is almost as big of an achievement as slapping another rudder on the F-5 and saying it is a new super fighter.

"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time."

Does that thing really weigh 550 pounds? You mean it weighs, roughly, the same as me and my motorcycle fully fueled? Just have a hard time believing it.

You must be thinking it has a reinforced chassis or an engine.

I know nothing about cars and stuff...but it looks like it's floundering. Are they supposed to do that?

I think they'll make nice targets when US/UK/IDF need some target practice in the battlefield.
