Bureaucracy indeed is the most likely answer.
Colt are the most bribing, slimy company you ever did see and so all the politicians are wallowing in their hookers and blow and so forget about a little german company making a rifle that doesn't suck. |

i don't think cause of the cost, the US military spends 553.10 billion $ per year on their military, thats more than any other country does

Phew, that is a lot of money, what the hell were they thinking?
And what I meant was bribery, as in Colt gives money to the officials that support it illegally so that they will continue signing up colt weapons to the army. |

From what I heard, the XM-8 weapon system was said to melt after to many shots were fired from it, even less shots were required to melt the gun's casing in desert eviroments. Seems like a good enough reason to me to cancel the program.
Also, a question, why is it that the XM-8 is one of the most popular and widely known prototype weapons in the US's wide variety of test weapons? Why not go for the Nuclear Artillary Jeep, or the XM-29? |

It was too expensive and showed no real improvement over the M4/M16 series.

Politics will take ANYTHING that puts a bullet downrange and tell the US military "Buy this gun, kthnxby." Apparently the M4/M16 got there first before the XM8.
Talk to the recent dust test you stupid bureaucrats. |

The XM8 showed considerable (>1%) reliability improvements over the M16 series rifles. It also contains a greater ability to customize straight off the shelf, with many planned versions and parts to create many different mission specific weapons. Overall, it is a superior weapon in a neater package.
It was not chosen because Colt (and other US manufacturers big and small) want the money from these government contracts, and pay the US government enough in political and other contributions that they kept them. |
