Going to 7.62mm would be the perfect solution. Weight doesn't matter anymore since I'm carrying 80 pounds of gear anyways. We already have the stockpiles of 7.62 and would allow riflemen and automatic riflemen to interchange ammo. The fighting today is either long range in mountainous terrain (Afganistan) or short to medium range in urban environments (Iraq). Long range requires larger caliber than 5.56 for effective put down capabilities, and urban fighting requires a round that has both immediate target effects (drops them/incapasitates them) and penetration through surrounding objects likely to be used for cover (wall, cars, etc).

The 5.56 accomplishes none of these.

The Mk.262 is an open tipped round. See attached picture.

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

it was designed so it could fill many roles, whilst also being portable. its just really a support weapon, but its so versatile it is used all the way from 8 man fire teams to landies, tanks and even helos, jus cus its so good and has been for many years.

agreed it would mean that the ragheads would be able to maybe use em if found, but then it would save us a shit load of ammo by robbing theres.
The way it has been explained to me was that we designed the 5.56 round with the idea that body armour was going to proliferate amongst Soviet infantry. The round was apparently supposed to turn said body armour into a liability.

It would supposedly penetrate body armor, causing the Soviets to use more resources to treat wounded when the millions came storming across Europe.

XM8 is horrible, i know that dont matter, but the HK416 is a far superior gun than M16/M4 or even XM8, the Barrett M468 SPC is an other awesome weapons...

XM8 is just a G36 redesigned...

If Army have to replace the Venerable M16A4/M4.. i hope they will go for 416 or 468...

The HK416 is just a G36 in an Armalite body.
