I wouldn't trust Wikipedia as a source.

Oh yes, it exists, but I don't think it will fully replace the M24. The Army recognized the need for a bolt-action sniper rifle in the 1980s. So, hopefully they will listen to the Sniper and SOTIC training cadre.

Several reasons. Bolt-action rifles have less moving parts and their accuracy is easier to retain through maintenance (both in terms of time and financial cost). Also, with a bolt action rifle it is easier to police your spent cartridge casings; a semi-automatic rifle can eject spent casings quite a distance, which can give your position away.

Yeah, there's no need to - or point in - switching back to semi-auto from bolt action.

That is probably more for a marksman role than a sniper.

Some tests found that there really was very little difference in accuracy between upgraded M21s and M24s so I think a new semi-automatic sniper rifle would do the job.

i think what they need is a rifle that can switch between semi auto and a mode where you have to pull the charging handle to eject the round and chamber a new one.
that way, if they need semi auto, they have it if they need to keep the round chambered after its fired to keep stealthy, they have it. i'm sure its possible just not really done before. maybe if they just used the m110 with an adjustable gas system, so you could open the gas tube so it wouldn't re-cock the hammer. |
