yea but i guess it would be used in Afghanistan rather than iraq , were mobility > armor.

a quote from a RAF reg gunner when asked about the WMIK:

"Yes we are exposed, But the Wmik can reach more hard to get to places. It can cover more boggy ground, than the hummer. So therefore you have to take the rough with the smooth!"

heh good point. Would certainly have its purposes and I suppose it would be a faster but less-armored/armed HMMWV? Or would it be more comparable to a DPV?

Probubly the best comparison viechle is the G-Wagon the Marines use as a fast attack viechle.

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Why would we want a vehicle that is less protected than the HMMWV?

Air-mobility. The Rangers acquired them in the early 90s because they could be driven on and off a Chinook, and you could fit them into a C-141 for airdrop and still seat paratroopers on either side of them. Now that they have the C-17 they can do that with HMMWVs.

They're not assault vehicles so much as a way to rapidly position crew served weapons.

Sorry, couldn't remeber the service name. But you know what I mean.

Land rovers do exactly what they say on the tin, they can get to some pretty remote places, that is why most british farmers have them. not only that but they can be airlifted by a merlin if needs be ( as can the WMIK)

The whole thing boils down to what you need the vehicle for, if you are likely to be attacked by IED, then pick something with good protection, if you are driving in a low risk, cross country area, land rover wins hands down.
