So this is not a new tank just a new general upgrade or not?
Something similar to T-72 -> T-90 (although T-90 is completely new from 60% or more) or more like T-80 -> T-80UM1/T-84 style?

Is there some completely new US concept like russian T-95?

Thunder, IIRC the T-84 is a Ukrainian upgrade of the T-80 that first appeared in the mid '90s. You might be thinking of the Yugoslav M84, which is very similar to the T-72.

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Good catch.
The Army Times is always lying about things.
Glad we have an expert like you to correct us.
I thought the Challenger was considered the "best in the world".
Electric engines and remote piloting may be just a few more days in the planning ...eh ?

Just because someone mentioned this earlier in the thread I will pass in information which may be useful too. I have a friend who works for BAE and he said that "fully Autonomous Combat Systems are illegal". I think it must have been signed under some treaty. I think I heard something about the UAV/UCAV taking some flack for this but the exceptions were primarily - War on Terror and that is REMOTE as oppposed to automated.

Although Im sure a few countries have and are researching automated prototypes.

I rock so you don't have to.

They have a remotely operated mini tracked vehicle that can carry MGs and rocket launchers and supposedly it is being fielded in Iraw now.
That robot stuff will quickly become outdated and the treaty changed or simply ignored.
There is no way that people will want a US soldier to die instead of a robot to satisft some treaty or agreement.

one of the downsides of the gas turbine engine is that it has to be refueled every 4 hours, while a diesel engine can go on for 24 hours
