A HK 416 (basically a souped up M4, in a similar midlife resurrection mode that HK did for the L85) in 6.8mm is what the Americans need - which is why it will never happen

Although considering that the L85A2 is probably the best all round assault rifle in the world, it might be in the Pentagon's interest to go down the high quality bullpup route particularly if they plan on keeping the rodent killing .223 round in the long term.

As for the M249, apparently the US haven't bought them in over a decade and they need to be replaced. And so far there have been no real competition for the FN weapon to deal with.

The .223 Rem. is not a weak round. It is performing poorly because the military keeps on chopping the length of the barrel and the type of ammunition that is used. Now troops mostly use M855, M193 is a better performer than M855. Another example of type of ammo differences is shown here.

Some time ago 7.62 NATO rounds manufactured in West Germany also had fragmenting properties. NATO standards do not specify jacket material or jacket thickness. The West German 7.62 round used copper-plated steel in the jacket, but their US counterparts used gilding metal alloy around .032 inches (.8mm) thick at the cannelure. The West German jacket is only about .020 inches (.5mm) thick near the cannelure. As a result of the differences, particularly the weaker jacket, the West German round yaws after 8cm or so in tissue before breaking in half at the cannelure. The nose, comprising just over half of the bullet's weight, generally remains intact, and the remaining mass of the lower half fragments. The result in tissue is predictably devastating.

HK MG4 E. Also the 249s are really worn out and some even have quality control problems.

Some 5.56x45mm ammo is very effective and lethal. The Mk.262 is one example that the military should start mass producing immediately at all of the plants that supply the military with their current M855 ammo.

To quote a guy I know: '"The 5.56x45 is an excellent round. Perfectly suited for Automatic weapons, it is also capable of unbelievable accuracy. With the right bullet, it also produces horrific wounds."

The problem is that we are just not using the right ammo.

I can't believe no one mentioned the FN SCAR in response to the original poster. The FN SCAR is not significantly larger than any other Assault rifles, and the heavy version is chambered to 7.62x51NATO.

AND it can also use standard AK-style magazines and can also fire 7.62X39 M43 ammo.
