M16A2 (A4 as well) question
To reload the M16, I have to first drop the empty mag out, and the insert the new one. Assuming I fired all my ammo for some reason, I need to pull the charging handle, which brings a new round into the chamber and readies the weapon for firing. However the animation for the M16 series of weapons currently has me smacking something into place after I pull the charging handle. What exactly is it? It's on the right hand side of the weapon, and looks somewhat like a button.

It's a forward assist.
"A forward assist assembly located on the right rear of the upper reciever permits manual locking of the bolt when this is not done by the force of the action spring." from UrbanDictionary.com, not the most reliable source, but it's right. Makes sure the round is properly seated and that the bolt's locked. |

Do you mean the forward assist? If so then, it is not mandatory to push the forward assist in. In the military you’ll be told to always smack the forward assist, this is done to manually assure the bolt is locked in place.

From what I have seen, the reloading animations are not based on real M16/A4 operation.
When you have emptied your mag, you should eject the old one and smack in a new one. Then you hit a lever on the left side of the rifle that will chamber another round. There is no pulling on any levers just to switch mags. I'd like to see this fixed too. More detail from Wiki-wanna-be-an-encyclopedia: Reload - Once the final round in a magazine is fired, the bolt will remain to the rear. Press the magazine release with the trigger finger of the right hand or the fingers of the non-firing hand. Let the magazine drop free. Insert a charged magazine into the magazine housing with the non-firing hand. There is a slight audible click when the magazine is properly fitted. The secureness of the magazine can be tested by gently trying to remove the magazine. Strike it from the base with medium firmness to make sure it locks home. Release the bolt using the bolt catch on the left side of the receiver or by retracting the charging handle and releasing it. |

Ah so it just makes sure the bolt stays back after the last round is fired then?

The M16a4 is mechanically identical to the m16a2. The only difference is the A4 has a picatinny rail system for the forward handguard and removable iron sights over another picatinny rail(the rear sight aperture/carrying handle only, not the front sight post). And the iron sights are graduated up to 600 meters, unlike 800 meters on the A2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mflGVfs99Q First few seconds of that video show an m-16 being (re?)loaded. This is a game created by the US army, so i'd hope for its accuracy in animation. | |

Pulling the charging handle gives the same response in the weapon as slapping the bolt-release on the left side of the mag-well, but from experience, the only time I've seen someone actually use the charging handle is to initially lock the bolt to the rear, or to charge the *first* round. The rifle, assuming no malfunctions, will lock the bolt-assembly to the rear on the firing of the last round. It's much faster, IMHO, to insert a mag, tug to check that it's locked, and slap the bolt release. Takes less time, and makes for a quicker transition from reloading to reacquiring a proper grip to resume firing.

Yeah so it's the foward assist, it's not nessesairy to do. When I go shooting wizth a bud of mine who's in the USMC, He just says push the thing on the left (its the only word I don't know) in and it's done, ahhh why don't I know these words. |
