From what I have read at 50 or something meters many times the first and second shots will be on target but the third will miss. Stabilize your weapon on an object and you might be able to get all three on target.

I used to love the three round burst idea but now I believe it is something we don't need that has been carried over from the Cold War days. If we train our soldiers well enough full automatic can give an advantage over three round burst.

3 round burst is so that 40-70s era Army Draftees wouldn't pray-n-spray, now that there is professional soldiers, that's not much of a problem.

[TT]engineer: Wow, camo that doesn't look like the designers took a dump on a piece of canvas and shouted "BRILLIANT!".

Agreed. It is something that should have been dumped with the M16A4.

Three-round burst was brought into play because the original M16A1s used in Vietnam weren't used properly by the squaddies. They'd get paranoid at a bush that just moved, flick the selector to fully-automatic and empty their whole magazine on a target, wasting ammo and giving away their position.

Nowadays engagements are often at greater ranges of those fought in 1939-1945, 1969-197?. Point is, single-fire is more useful to the military these days. The L85 has a fully-automatic fire mode, the M16A2/4 has three-round burst. None of them are really going to need it unless they're doing house to house clearances/searches.

In Iraq where most of the fighting takes place near or in cities and towns infantry combat is at rather short ranges. Also since many cities and towns are by rivers there are some trees and vegetation. In Afganistan due to all of the hills longer range firefights are more common but there are still firefights are closer ranges.

Lampshade, unless you are in a room with a guy, you'd use single shot. Aim for the vital areas (head, abdomen) with the 5.56 round or you're gonna get tagged after you tag him. If you are aiming at vital areas, 2nd and 3rd rounds of a burst aare gonna be off target.

The XM8 program has been stoped for some reasons and the Scar won the Round ( they where desiding to take the scar or the XM8 ) as far as i know !!!

At what range? At QCB ranges those 2nd and 3rd shots should be right on target.
