I guess its AP capabilities are derived from HEAT ammo?

It's just that to me the barrel looks too short to get a kinetic round up to a decent speed (unlike the e.g. Steyr IWS 2000 http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sn46-e.htm)

Also the rounds don't look like the standard 25 mm x 137 mm, they look shorter ...

That's correct. It is supposed to use the same family of ammunition as the Objective Crew-Served Weapon.
