robbo, the steyer rifle is basically a little tank cannon, it doesnt just fire simply big ammunition, but small sabots - which most likely pierce through a lot more armor than one of those 5cal or whatever anti-material rifles

Remember children, penetration does not equal kill! Shooting pub darts through a metal box will not make it explode!

Its interesting this thing goes through 4 centimeters of rolled steel at 0 degrees, because good armor is neither rolled homogenous steel nor at a 0 degree impact angle. I don't buy the in-and-out claim, the penetrator will be on a crazy wobble after exiting the first wall and will probably lodge in a subsystem.

Basically I think its your typical wonder-weapon; wonderfully hyped.

If you knew where to hit the APC you could do some serious damage.

And hype sells. My father has a friend who is a gun dealer. He said when glocks first came on the market there was a lot of hype that because of the plastics and syths they could pass through a metal detector... total BS but if people hear something they sometimes believe it.
Still, its a pretty impressive gun.

uh, thatīs exactly what it is supposed to do - anti material rifles are supposed to take uot sub-systems, it would be ludicrous to think that they could destroy a real vehicle

i think the weapon would have fared quite well, in itīs primary role, but i doubt that it would fare bad as anti-personnel

Back to the good ol' days of the anti tank rifle.

When you scale things up, the penetration makes the metal fly everwhere and causes alot of internal damage. Also i heard that the actual friction heats up the inside alot and causes further damage, although i know what you're saying and i'm probably wrong as usual.

It is in essence a portable semi-automatic cannon with a scope. Not really practical either imo.

Seems like .50 cal rifles are becoming the norm these days and only bigger will suffice.

That's why most modern vehicles are fitted with anti-spall armour to stop the nasty little fragments.
