Holding M-16's / M4's (A Question)
I see people holding M-16's (or M-4's) in different ways - sometimes they put one hand on the trigger handle and the other under the barrrel; other times they put one hand on the trigger handle and the other in front of the clip. I know why they keep the hand on the trigger handle - the gun won't shoot otherwise. Are there situations where soldiers use the "under the barrel" grip versus the other one, or is it just individual preference?
Thanks! |

Its all about keeping the weapon stable against your body. Neither way is wrong. And yes, it is just a preference.
To be honest. I prefer using a combat grip for this reason alone, however in the absense of the foward combat grip I use the magazine method. |

I know its not Real as such, but when I go Airsofting, I use the magazine method aswell, far more comfortable.

I think that for M4 maybe possible hold the rifle with the magazine(anyway not suggested...you can accidentally move it and do a malfuction in the reloading system or loose some gas needed at recharge the breechblock)...but never mind to use that "grip" with a real M16,dont forget that the hand in the trigger handle is only for shoot...the other one has the job to support the entire weapon that weight 4 kilos and,overall,1 meter long(the two hands are too much near for can keep the weapon balanced).
For private shooting mighty it's a confort preference(?) but i dont belive that you shoot under the Army with the magazine method the major sergent is very happy. |

I resist the temptation to hold the magazine. At least on the 16's you can rest your hand on the magazine well instead of the mag itself. What =SE=N@poleone said is exactly why it isn't the best way to hold any firearm by its box. There's a good chance of feeding problems when you hold it like that.

Many people don't hold on to the magazine its self, but really the magazine well. I would rather hold on to the forearm than the mag well, but people hold on to the mag well because the bolt release is really close to the mag well.
