When did the .30 get taken out of service?

I was wondering, it's something I should know.

I mean the M2 .50 is still in service today. I'm guessing it got replaced in Vietnam with the M-60?

And I'm guessing since we moved to 7.62 round then to the 5.56 that is another reason it got taken out. Plus it's heavy and needed two men to handle it.

According to wikipedia the Mk 21 Mod 0/1, an M1919 converted to 7.62x51 by the US navy stayed in service, there might even still be a few floationg about. Apparently other 7.62x51 versions were still in service in the 90s...

The M1917 was phased out infavor of the M60 in the 60s.

Apparently Sweeden rechambered all thier M1917s to 7.62x51 in the 70s so they may still be in service there

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Ah thanks, I'm guessing the NAVY used it as a mounted weapon?? I figured about the M-60, it must of been phased out between korea and nam.

The Mk21 Mod 0/1 was used in Vietnam on river craft according to:

That being the case, I think it was phased out >during< Nam.

Teh?? The .30 is still in service. The M1919A series IS NOT in service. However you should probably know that .30cal = 7.62mm. The .30 round is still widely used: M240B/G/C, M21, M14, SCAR-H are just a few of the weapons currently still in stock that use the .30 round.

The M1919 was a damn good weapon (as is the M2) but compared to todays weaponry it doesnt hold much. The M240B is one hell of a weapon and is capable putting more lead downrage at a faster rate.

Not to mention that a 1919 required a 2-man crew. The 240 is WAY lighter, comes in a 'light' variant which only requires one soldier to operate, and is easier to disasemble and change barrels.

In fact, the standard that we came up with was 1:30 to disasemble and reassemble the entire weapon.
