Navy jet has 'catastrophic mechanical malfunction,' hits apartments in Virginia - CNN.com
No fatalities found yet; from the sounds of it they were able to dump fuel and eject before impact, mitigating the explosion and fire damage. Sounds like a bird strike to me. |

For a successful plane as F-18 is, its a terrible accident.

It's always bound to happen. Just like a few years ago when the USMC F/A-18 had dual engine failure and crashed into the house near MCAS Miramar.
2008 San Diego F/A-18 crash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Won't know more until investigation is complete. Definitely glad no one was seriously injured in the crash, especially since it went into an apartment complex. |

The USMC one was a D. I don't know about this one, it didn't say. Most I see is "F18 FIGHTER JET CRASHES!!!" because the news in the US doesn't know designations of the US military aircraft. The best I was was this:
Navy jet crashes into Virginia apartments, at least 9 hurt | Reuters It states it is an F/A-18D, but I still don't know. It could possibly be an F/A-18F, but I don't and probably won't know cause I get out of the Marines in 3 days and won't be able to look things up. Just have to wait for the military report to come out. That article also states mechanical failure, so that's a step up towards a conclusion. |

Official Navy statement says it's a D.
USFF Releases Statement on F/A-18 Crash in Virginia Beach Thought they had different FRS for legacy Hornet and Super Hornet, but according VFA 106's own site, they train both types. According to quick Google, the only other FRS for legacy Hornet seems to be a Marine unit on the West Coast. |
