1 million rounds a minute
Sorry if this has been posted before.
I just saw it and well, it's amazing what they can do with what looks like a square tin can with some pipes in it.... Link: http://www.yikers.com/video_gun_can_..._a_minute.html Me thinks the manufacturers of ammunition for this gun must be some happy campers! |

This thing, I think its called Metal Storm or something of that sort, was on Future Weapons on the Discovery Chanel. They didn't do it at a million Round per minute though, but wow when it did it it sounded as if only one gun was shooting thats so awsome...

i actually dont think that metal storm is that great, at least most of its incarnations. for exmple, they have some kind of minigun - or lets say multibarreled gun, which has also some super fancy rof and so, but:
- you cant really reload it, the fastest way would be to replace the barrles, but is that so good? - the first rounds have to be very inaccurate, seeing as they only travel a very short distance in the barrel (because they bullets are lined up one after another). mostly, its the fact that you cant really reload this things bugs me - for example, they developed a revolver that has 4 barrels and has a super duper rof, 9mm ammunition. but to reload you have to replace the barrels |

More of a phycolgical weapon than phyiscal mabey. Thought of 10 of those things all firing on a small area would scare the sh*t out of most peeps but the actuall damages would either only cover a small area OR be quite light over a larger one (reasonable chance bullet will miss you)
Personaly i would rather have a 105 artilery gun or few motars. A fast firing automatic motar migth be more effective in general than metal storm - could even have mulitple airbursting motars, nwo that would be deadly!! |

I think the gun is meant to shoot down missles. 1 bullet is bound to hit the missle if there are a million headed its way.

its also pretty old ^^
Quote:
also, the thing is pretty accurate, there is no mechnical trigger - all the bullets are triggered by a electrical system and the guns are triggered so fast, that they nearly dont suffer from recol. the trigger-system is also the key to the high rof, because you can practically trigger all rounds at once, you get such crazy numbers Quote:
they have the "self-defence" version, the revolver, and those larger things. they have an add where those are mounted on an airplane (bad cg graphics, i mean, really bad) and they attack a large area on the ground look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_storm and here:http://youtube.com/watch?v=67OYIk1woiI btw, very interesting: Quote:
edit: looks like they´ve improved the crappy cg video XD | |||

The GPMG that the british army have only been using on base defence is capable of firing too many rounds too, but you are talking 12-15 per squeeze of the trigger.
This is still too much because one round through a man is as good as 10 !!!!!! Hence why the tripod for base defence has a rocking motion which spreads the rounds out to catch more targets. This isn't making it inaccurate at all, just prevents the waste of ammunition. You learn the spread of rounds firing uphill or downhill in practise. |

What was the target ? It looked like wooden doors. From what I could see the penetration on the last shot was tremendous, the hole in the door was at least 18" across. Perhaps its more for MOUT, the pentration value of 180 rounds hitting all at once.

Actually I would much rather have 10 bullets in my enemy than 1. 1 shot does not necessarily mean they're down. There more the merrier.
