Rice criticises 'isolated' Russia

BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Rice criticises 'isolated' Russia
I dont know how they make these speeches with a straight face! My personal hypocritical highlights :

"The Georgian government launched a major military operation into Tskhinvali [the capital of South Ossetia] and other areas of that separatist region," she said.
"Regrettably, several Russian peacekeepers were killed in the fighting," she added.
But Ms Rice said that Russia had escalated the conflict.
"Russia's leaders violated Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and launched a full-scale invasion across an internationally recognised border"

"What has become clear is that the legitimate goal of rebuilding Russia has taken a dark turn - with the rollback of personal freedoms, the arbitrary enforcement of the law [and] the pervasive corruption at various levels of Russian society"

Actually we got alot of criticism in vietnam, and don't forget Soviet Union did attack Afganistan, any way ive heard of something that georgia found out that russia attacked georgia before they invaded South Ossetia but its probly not true, watever this is like another Cold War just not announced and Rice is just playing the part as the enemy of russia preaty much these is starting all over again.

PlayNCool, since you may not know because of your age or just because of willful ignorance and prejudice, at the time of the conflict there were TWO Vietnams, one of them communist. Guess which one was fomenting an insurgency in the other?

You mean Georgia attacked separatists within its own borders, and Russia invaded, don't you? South Ossetia was not recognized as an independent state or as a territory of Russia by any outside party. In short, it was part of Georgia, even if some Russian citizens happened to live there. By your logic the Republic of Ireland would be in its right to retaliate if fighting between the UK and the PIRA re-escalated, and that Germany was right in 1938 to annex Czechoslovakia and the Sudetenland to "protect" German citizens residing there.

Philnopatience, why only mention Afghanistan? Russia invaded Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia, too.

But there is a reason that the last thread about this was locked, so this one gets it, too.

If you talking about Vietnam, maybe you should also mention The Domino Principle how all South Eastern Asia will fall to damn commies if South Vietnam will fall. This Principle was corner-stone of US propaganda and caused many young Americans enlist in army and fight in Nam. And what happen in reality after fall of South Vietnam?

This is just endless and I already wrote all of this, but anyway:

Let's see juridical side of problem. Georgia as Soviet Republic signed agreement stating that every republic willing to leave Soviet Union must start referendum in main republic and all authonomies if they want to stay inside republic separating from Union.

For Georgia that means refrendum in Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. There was referendum in Georgia and most of Georgian citizens voted to quit from Union. OK. There was referendums in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, almost all of their citizens voted not to live inside Georgia. Georgia wasn't ecstasized about it and that caused Georgian president Zviad Gamsakhurdia to start wars in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He failed and was killed during civil war inside Georgia. De jure and de facto Abkhazia and South Ossetia never been parts of independent Georgian state.

It already happened in history: after 1917 Georgia became independent from Tsarist Russia and with help from Turkey and England invaded Abkhazia and South Ossetia and started ethnical cleansings. Soviets troops with three tanks (sic!) arrived from north and overthrew Georgian forces and captured entire Georgia. The history taught someone nothing.

"The details of who did what to precipitate Russia's war against Georgia are not very important. Do you recall the precise details of the Sudeten Crisis that led to Nazi Germany's invasion of Czechoslovakia? Of course not." That's right. Don't let the facts confuse you, just remember Hitler. Now, let's roll!

Yes, Panama, Grenada, Haiti and other countries invaded by USA are just not worth mention. USSR is just equal to word "military aggression".
