Conflict in Georgia/South Ossetia

Today, Georgia officially acknowledged regional Russian peacekeeper's HQ about starting of military actions against South Osetia. That was report from captain Vladimir Ivanov, PR aide of Joint peacekeeping forces commander in Georgian-Osetian conflict zone. He also mentioned that in current time peacekeeper's blocks are taking fire from Georgian troops.

On approaches to Tzkhinwal (sorry, don't know exact spelling of that word in English) South Osetian and Georgian troops came into contact. Still there are no information about victims from both sides, "but firing was really heavy" - Ivanov said. Small arms, grenade launchers and "Grad" unguided rocket artillery systems are currently involved in batter.

I've never heard of South Osetia before and had to look it up.
It's a part of Georgia that declared independence in the 1990's and Georgia is just now going to war with them?

Did I get that right?

Yes, you did.

Many citizens of South Osetia obtained Russian passports and officially became citizens of Russian Federation, this fact can lead to further complications (when someone firing near your borders at your citizens it's a hell of a complication).

South Osetian parliament already asked Russian president for help, while Georgian troops began assault of Tzkhinwal using aviation, heavy armor and artillery.

ex-Soviet Georgia has allied itself with the West and is pushing for membership of NATO

If Russia does does go to war with Georgia i hope they think of the possible consequences of NATO backing Georgia.

I don't think Russia will start direct ground assault on Georgian troops in South Osetia or on Georgian territory.

In case people forgot: this is the same conflict where a Russian Mig shot down a Georgian UAV. Both sides have been abusing this conflict.

It's not correct. If it was really Russian MiG shot down that UAV, then all Georgian bombers should be already crashed and burned. Why should Russians shot down single UAV and then let military aircrafts fly and drop bombs on territory near Russia?
