What he proposes is perfectly reasonable, but Obama really should have waited until after his inauguration (if he does become President) before bringing something as confusing to the average American as this into play.

When making announcements in a heated presidential election (to be), a politician needs to cater to the lowest common denominator to be understood by everyone. Don't forget that many voters will not even bother to look into the details of the idea. From a politician's viewpoint, the words "civilian security force" can and will be interpreted by the public as a proposal for a uniquely American version of the Schutzstaffel - absolutely not what Obama suggested. Despite whatever he says, it is never safe to assume what the people will think of such a statement, especially going into an election like this one.

The argument then goes back to ascertaining exactly what Obama meant. By 'civilian national security force', I don't think he literally means a militia-type government organization, but perhaps an unofficial national security force, much like America's civilian 'war effort' of World War II, which consisted of rationing and recycling metal for the troops abroad, while also following rules - some written, some unwritten - on how to treat the 'enemy' and those of the enemy's ethnicity.

Then again, he could actually mean what he said, in which case he is unforgivably foolish in his choice of words.

Lying about plans is not equal to simplifying them, though I do see your line of reasoning. Still, if Obama seriously means that he would fund a civilian national security force at equal or greater levels than that of our armed forces, then even the Democratic Congress, which is more unpopular than our current President (~14% for Congress compared to ~30% for George W.), would have to intervene if he ever takes office.

McCain will probably use this as ammunition against the Obama campaign - regardless of whether it has a lasting effect, it will be used against Obama in the future, or so I predict.

Not sure to understand, is it about establising a large militia force for national crysis or forced military service ? A militia cannot be as well founded and strong as the professional full time armed force...

National Guard
USMC
US Air force
US Army
US Navy
US Coast Guard
CIA and all these special agencies
All police corps
Lot of civilian militia group patrolling border...

Biggest military budjet worldwide, 45% of world military budjet. The Largest volontary armed force...

Stop reading what you wanna read, and read what he said. He said a CIVILIAN (see, non-governmental) national security force (force for national security).

If nothing else, liberals are notorious for sapping power from law enforcement. A civilian security force that doesn't answer to the government certainly gels best with this overall ideal.

SO that begs the question....who will control this civilian force ?

And I doubt if the "average" American would know who the Shutzstaffel is or the even the Stasi.

This sounds, to me, like a half assed idea.
Another dreamer plan that somehow the military is not doing a good job and we can get 2 million volunteers to join this "civilian" force and do a better job.

Anybody feel safer because the TSA is on the job ?

We don't know what he meant and probably never will because he won't mention it again.

We are already in for enough surprises in January as it is because to me there is no doubt that Obama will win.
