'Warning Letters to File Sharers'

BBC NEWS | Technology | Warning letters to 'file-sharers'

well what does this mean for you? Any of you recived a letter?

additionally can it really track every file sharing, as im sure nearly any internet able person has most likely downloaded or shared something illegal even if it was without their own knowledge

There is a phenomenal amount of piracy out there and we believe that the idea that 95% of content on the net is free is not sustainable. We don't believe that society can allow the free consumption of content to persist,
Anyone who is against me getting free stuff is not cool. I don't support illegal activities, but preserving the "freeness" of the internet is something worth fighting for. Or soon they'll start charging for everything! Damned capitalists.

I can honestly say I don't think I have any illegal content on my computer.
I just think of the Kid Rock PSA some one posted a week or so ago.

More than half the content on the internet is not search able, or track able by anyone. Thats why it will never go away, it has always been that way, only recently has stuff been so easily shared to anyone, by searches and public storage. All that is public has a copy that is private, that will alway be able to be reuploaded. The Darknets are like the abyss.

They're going about protecting content the absolute wrong way.

The reason why there's so much prevalence of file sharing is that the content isn't worth people paying for it.

What they need to do is learn to ignore the people who won't pay for their stuff and concentrate on the people who will. Pirates don't get to vote as they say, if a certain audience doesn't pay in general, don't cater to them, cater to an audience with a greater number of paying costumers.

In addition, give your paying costumers a better expirience then your non-paying costumers. If non-paying costumers get a better expirience, where's the incentive to pay for anything? A few easy examples, video games tend to have draconian measures to prevent pirating, but the measures rarely survive for long, and people who illegally download it don't have to deal with any of of those measures. Anime is another easy example, American consumers who wait for the official release wait months to years, even decades, watching a fansub is a day or so later. The music industry is getting better, but still, it's relatively draconian.

The web demands a service model that is far more consumer oriented, because consumer's patience for companies is far more limited due to ease of obtaining products illegally. Rather then blaming the consumers (right or not) companies need to take the practical approach of satiating them. Illegal files are too widespread to take down with legal action alone, treating costumers better is the only option.
