Actually, most of the research on suicide suggests that if you stop people commiting suicide in one way, they generally don't do it in another.

For example, in the UK you can only buy 16 grams of paracetamol at a time. No, it doesn't stop people committing suicide by overdoses of paracetamol, but it stops impulse suicide from overdose because you can't buy a single lethal dose at once.

People who are seriously determined and actively suicidal will always find a way to end their lives, if they want to. However, the person who suffers a brief crisis (argument with spouse, sudden financial loss etc) and who reacts by reaching for the medicine cabinet generally won't find a lethal dose of paracetamol in it.

Likewise, banning handguns doesn't stop those people who are seriously determined to end their lives from shooting themselves. But it does stop people suddenly picking up a gun and turning it on themselves, because law-abiding Joe Public won't have access to a gun.

If you want further reading on suicide (and from some of the comments here it sounds like a fair few of you could do with actually knowing something about the subject) then I suggest looking at sources such as:

National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP): Surgeon General's Call To Action

What does that have to do with a rope? Which in some form or another can be found in any household or acquired easily. Are they going to not sell people more than 4 feet of rope at a time? What about the good old pants belt? Hanging yourself gets it done quite effectively, so does carbon monoxide.

The gun rights argument boils down to this. Until I am given a 100% guarantee to be free from the effects of crime and oppressive police and government institutions, my right to protect me and mine will trump all others.

Thats kinda sad Kenway. If you need a gun to feel safe, your not safe, even if you have the gun...
In my country, the police dont carry guns. (they might have one in the car)

Ppl jump off bridges or crash their car at high speeds to commit suicide around here.

Yea and some might say that the right to protect the health and safety of others in less direct and masculine ways are more important and effective.

Plus we're talking about a general notion, so dumping your unique constitution on the argument doesn't have much bearing on the actual merits of the arguments. That just says what the law is in your country. As Drake said even police don't carry guns in his country.

Care to explain what other methods exist for protecting the health and safety of others? Can't use the police forces as they aren't legally required to protect you plus they use the exact same methods.

Yes I feel safer with a gun. And yes a gun makes you safer IF you are properly trained and disciplined in its use. If that wasn't true cops and soldiers wouldn't carry them.

Yes this is a constitutional argument as it was started from the SCOTUS case just recently and list stats that are only applicable to the United States.
