Harman pushes discrimination plan

BBC NEWS | Politics | Harman pushes discrimination plan

What a bunch of cnuts! The phrase "positive discrimination" to me is no more of a bollox statment than saying "a caring rape"! Im all for 100% equality, but making discrimination part of the law to stop discrimination - who thought that one up!
Of course they say that age discrimination will be stopped which is good - but i wonder if that means that student goverment support for under 25's will no longer be calculated off parents incomes, or under 25's will stop getting different rates of benefit.
Also they say that part time women earn less - most of the women earning less are working for the f**king goverment ( dinner ladies/cleaners/admin assistants etc )
Not only that but If I was a women/ethnic minority, I would be equally against this, as it will create a popular opinion that theyre incapable of getting a job on merit.
Rant over What do you guys think - is there any good side to this?

disclaimer : I'm from America so I have very little real opinions on this. But these issues sound like its from the 50's

Quote:
She said firms should be able to choose a woman over a man of equal ability if they wanted to - or vice versa.
Sounds like non issues, but does this REALLY happen! Men get a priority for jobs?

Quote:
The new Equalities Bill will also force public sector employers to disclose the gender pay gap in their organization.
Should BE a non issue, but even America has these problems

Quote:
The plans, which will be adopted in England, Wales and Scotland, will also ban all age discrimination.
Not a good idea if it comes to safety.

No men dont get priority for jobs at all - in fact in many cases its the exact opposite. There may be some small companies with sexist male managers who see women as second rate, but on the other hand theres plenty of sexist female managers who see men as second rate - particularly in some civil service jobs.

As for the pay gap, they are not talking about different pay rates per hour which are equal by law - they are saying that women who work part time earn on average earn 40% less, than men who are working full time! who'd of though that eh!

Methinks everyone will have too much of an opinion on this to find anything unbiased. Someone needs to post the plan itself so we can see what it actually says.

They do the same thing here.
When they say women earn 75-85 cents to the man's dollar they are not calculating on a job by job basis but on total earnings over a long period of time and the man that works 60 our weeks for 10 years will earn more than the woman who takes off to have or 3 children in that same ten years.
Both the man and the woman could be doing the same job for the same pay but the way it is presented doesn't reflect that.

Does that mean I can demand 'equal pay' for my 10 hour job and earn as much in 10 hours as others do in 30?
