Re: [Read the First Post in FULL before voting] Morality Questions
Did I? Maybe if you knew more about trains hitting cars you'd know that very often everybody on board the train is fine and there is NO DERAILMENT!! Maybe I should have explained every single thing that was part of my decision making process. Course I'm pretty sure no matter what I say you will misconstrue it and come back with your 'anti-whatever I said' remarks. Can you simply just respond without the backhanded insults for once? Try it.

For crying out loud will you two stop hijacking threads with your pretty "he said/she said" rubbish. You're both headed for warning points at this rate.

Re: [Read the First Post in FULL before voting] Morality Questions
It is not an insult.
I would never judge anyone, merely note their reactions. He puts up a simple question, no additional facts needed. This is the situation you are presented with, answer the question based on that, no derailment rates, car brakes, train speed or local humidity readings are necessary. That is the whole point of the original questions, no added variables, which would be factored out in the end anyway. Do you save the many and live with the fact that you chose to kill or injure the few ? I admit I find your answer more palatable than those who would do nothing and just watch the people die. |

Re: [Read the First Post in FULL before voting] Morality Questions
I suppose a real life example of something like this was when Harry Truman authorized the dropping of the atomic bomb over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which killed hundreds of thousands of people but potentially saved millions of American soldiers and Japanese civilians and soldiers.

Re: [Read the First Post in FULL before voting] Morality Questions
Not potentially.
There were over 100,000 casualties taking Okinawa alone, all military and civilian combined. There is no doubt that taking mainland Japan would have cost millions of lives. The government ordered 500,000 purple hearts for the invasion of Japan. We still haven't used them all in all the wars since. Taking and holding mainland Japan would have been an absolute horrorshow and while it was horrible for those people in those cities, in all likelihood many of them would have died in the invasion or fighting afterward. The real moral test is when you don't know for sure how many lives, if any, will be spared if you kill this one person. Then you are gambling with your soul. |

Which is a fine example of sacrificing a few to save the many, had Japan had already made overtures to both the Russians and to America about conditional surrender prior to the bomb being dropped.

Aside from that, a month at the end of your life probably isnt too worth it, imho. But as long as I had a few days to send myself off, Id be more than willing to save a life. Plus I could be a total prick to the receiver and be all like "Im freaking giving up my month for you, so dont f**k it up, ok? No pressure, Im just sayin' is all..." :P | |
