Barack Obama Becomes First Major African American Presidential Nominee

A historic day for the nation to say the least. The Democratic Presidential Race has finally come to a close. Sen. Barack Obama will face Sen. John McCain in November.

EDIT: Being the moron I am, I omitted "African American" in the title between 'Major' and 'Presidential'. *Gives seductive look towards MODs*

I am thrilled to have cast my vote for him and I earnestly hope that he becomes the president of our country. I am proud to see how far we have come in nominating the first person of color for president.

Quite sad that it has to make a difference, but I agree.

It is sad, but I am glad to see that we are overcoming it.

Excuse me? How is his color even an issue? The office of the presidency is not something that should be obtained by ANY other "qualification" than merit.

I can tell I'm going to make enemies by saying this, but who the hell gives a damn if he's black. This election is turning out to be a race in the special Olympics.

Fixed. This should be interesting.

And betterdeadthanred, you are missing the key point in that the people who DONT care try to tell those who DO that it shouldnt matter. But sadly, there are plenty of people in the US and the rest of the world who DO think race makes a difference. So someone saying they are glad we have moved past it enough has a very founded statement...

When you read the polls and see that in some places such as West Virginia and see that two-thirds of people say that race is an issue that affects their vote, when - in which I whole heartedly agree - that it shouldn't be an issue. History has been made today and I am glad to be witness to it.

The thing that saddens me the most is that he has so few qualifications for the position, yet stands probably the best chance of getting elected based squarely upon the fact that he is black. It's not just unfair, it's pathetic. While I have confidence he could become a leader worthy of the office, my advice to him would be to give us a call in 10-20 years, no less. As of now, to put him in the same line of leaders such as Washington, Lincoln and the Roosevelts is frankly insulting.

Is it just me or has the quality of American politicians been in sharp decline over the past few decades?

That must be your perception because it seems to me, a largely race neutral person, that his race doesn't matter as far as I'm concerned when he says things that make sense. That he is black and that he's made it says that for the most part America has moved past letting race get in the way of selecting.

But then there's guys like you. Its funny really that for the longest time black people have nothing and suddenly they're getting off for free.

lol, who said hes on par with washington and lincoln and the rest of the crew? First major black pres candidate is not saying hes the leetest man since washington...

also, the old presidents you are reading about? Washington et al, yeah, I'm sure they were nowhere NEAR as amazing as "AMERICA THE BRAVE history 101" makes them out to be in school :P Nor a lot of the books on them. All those books tend to make each president seem the best of all mankind...
