Confederate group plans giant flag in Hillsborough County - St. Petersburg Times

I like to read about the civil war and I understand there were many motivations for the volunteers that made up the southern army but when will some people face the facts ?

The war was about slavery, they were on the slave holding side,.......................and they LOST !!

But on the free speech side of things, they do have the right to express themselves, just like Rev Wright and Mr. Cone etc.

The article mentions it is about history and how they try to explain, and yet I found no explanation for why you fly a flag from the losing side in a civil war unless you still supported the goals of that war.

There must be another way to encourage state's rights besides this.

Honoring ancestors with a flag that is usually affliated with slavery. Not very well thought.

Althought, some might appreciate it as historical symbol, as confederate lost and slavery is part of history now.
Why would they put up a memorial for it considering their heritage, is beyond me.

Well on that note, it would be nice to think of a day when that ancient symbol regains it's meaning.
The nazis lasted less than 20 years, why should they get to hold onto that symbol forever ?

But I am really interested to see if anyone is willing to defend the flying of this flag, based on those rights that we are allegedly losing at such a rapid pace.

The war was not about slavery as much as the average American would want to believe. Notwithstanding that Lincoln disliked slavery he would have been content to have a United States including slave owning states, which is a politically pragmatic view that took precedence over his personal morality. After all when things got rolling and he declared Emancipation he did not declare it across the board did he, but only on states in rebellion and out of Union control. I think the idea that the war was about slavery is a charming folktale a lot of white people in America would like to believe.

Although I myself am not from the south I can't see why such a symbol should be so important. And a flag the size of a semi trailer - posted by the highway no less where everyone can see it - just sounds like the dream of some racist megalomaniacs.

While this may be true it doesn't change the fact that slavery is wrong and is still associated with the confederate flag in the minds of most people

Actually, the original is 45' rotated from the form the Nastional Socialist Worker's Party used, with all lines either running vertically or horizontally

I think this is a silly idea...sure free speech etc. But the store owners and such have a point. it STILL carries that message... and the black customers prolly wouldnt like it, let alone tourism to the area from blacks etc. Itd prolly get bad image from it.

Itd be like a german museum for the war wanting to fly the Swatstika... [well, isnt it illegal in germany?] but from a US perspective SURE you COULD.... but come on... its just a bad idea, you know?

There are better ways to remember your fallen family veterans from the civil war...

It was also used by Finnish air force from 1918 until 1945, then it was changed for obvious reasons.
