Death toll rises as Lebanon simmers - CNN.com

BBC NEWS | Middle East | Fighting spreads east of Beirut

My view on it:
Lebanese government pissed at Hezbollah ordered the private Hezbollah-Syrian-Iranian telecom network to be closed, Hezbollah pissed at the government starts shooting and blowing pro-government stuff, government orders army to fight Hezbollah but army refuses and the government backs down from the demand to close the private telecom network.

Oh ffs, when Syrian forces withdrew I thought things might change for the better. But everything has only been going downhill since.

Yup. Pretty much agreed. The army is patrolling the streets right now but only to prevent secterian killings, not to do anything about hezbollah. I dont see this becoming a bigger conflict within lebanon, it will most probably die down soon and status quo is restored, which in Lebanon means great political instability as always.

Personally I view it as a milestone, Lebanon's army refused to fight Hezbollah and do what the (legal) government ordered it to do, another step toward the slippery hill of civil war.

This is another milestone because, Hezbollah bragged that its guns are only pointing at one direction yet in the last few days it has been proven that they are more then willing and capable of using it against the Lebanese government, that about 2 years ago proclaimed it the defenders of Lebanon.

It is another milestone because Lebanon received no help from the west that allowed Hezbollah to do whatever it want, Hezbollah basically "defeated" the government by taking over Beirut and blocking the airport.

Sarcasm might be hard to translate to non-English speakers. I was referring to the people who think that Hezbollah is a bunch of freedom fighters against "Israeli oppressors."

you also got to remember that the lebanese government is plagued with inefficiencies, internal fighting, doesnt have a head of state and is on the verge of collapse, even the army doesnt trust its judgement.

hezbollah on the other hand has a clearly defined leadership, a formidable military and its public works programmes and social services have garnered a large base of support.

the only reason it hasnt gone the whole way and just overthrown the government is that isreal would like nothing more than to 'liberate' a Hezbollah controlled lebanon
