F-15 Grounding Strains U.S. Defenses
- The grounding of hundreds of F-15s because of dangerous structural defects is straining the nation's air defense network, forcing some states to rely on their neighbors' fighter jets for protection, and Alaska to depend on the Canadian military.

If anything happened that required the use of the Eagles they would be used. It's not like they are all broken and can't fly. I know a couple guys who are maintainers on 15s.

Yeah they could fly, they are not as a (unneccesary IMO) precaution.
If they really thought there was a problem they'd toss a Nimitz Class up near Alaska |

There are still F15s flying combat missions over Iraq/Afghanistan. They are not all failing, there are just concerns that need to be addressed before safety of pilots is assured. It would look bad if the politicians didn't check things out after a major crash.
If it was a huge issue they would fly them. It's not, so they are pretty much gonna wait it out for a bit, then call them safe and toss them back in the air. |

Only the E model is flying, which is the ground attack version.

Well hopefully the USAF will eventually be able to get more F-22As out of this. Yet congress will make it as difficult as possible.

k wait soo the F-15 has been flying for 30 years(correct me if i am wrong) and they didn't see this problem? And if the problem is that bad how come when they weren't grounded they weren't all just dropping out of the sky?

I would not be suprised if the whole of the USAF was grounded. 12-16 ground crew per airframe just because yanks cannot multi-task is pethetic.
They have turned me on, the little pigs. 16 muscular men fixing an aircraft up for the defence of the nation is a saucy scene indeed. |

I still can't help but think that this grounding is either a conspiracy to reduce US air coverage or a powerplay to get more funding for producing F-22s and F-35s.
One plane was destroyed due to this structural problem. 1 out of ~600 in 30 years. Let's do some quick math. No, let's not. The F-15s are fine and any crashes are near negligible risks. Phase in replacements, certainly, but don't but the country at risk over a minute chance of an accident. A survivable accident at that. |

A conspiracy? I don't think that is the case but the USAF might have to revert to one to get congress to give them the cash for newer fighters.
