Are you saying an actual cold war or a war that is held in cold conditions because i reckon it could kick off. Putin is hardly the sanist man alive and I wouldnt put it past him to start something...

There have always been subs and such in that area, and the US has had a large number of jets in Alaska since WWII. Canada and Russia and US territory all meet up in that area and being that it's pretty uninhabitable it wasn't an issue until now. I don't think the Cold War ever ended, it just froze for a while. Putin isn't insane, he's just restablishing Russia to what it was.

Gah, all the hype don't mean jack. The new president of Russia will likely be Putin's golden boy (what's his name? Oh who cares, he's russian) who seems slightly more liberal in his approach.
Besides, many new models show that the amount of resources at the poles was probably grocely overestimated by money hungry polar drilling companies, so it may all be a waste of time. |

I don't think its going to be a big deal. Both the US and Russia can project military power at the poles, but the soviet navy is horribly outclassed. US subs have been working on detecting and destroying russian subs under polar ice and in polar waters for more than 4 decades, while most of the russian sub force is rusting out in their northern atlantic naval bases. The US has the manpower and technological capabilities to control the polar seas, while russia has a little political clout on a flag.

North Pole? What about the south which, unlike the north, has land underneath its ice. Its a real mess... especially with the UK and Agentina (and of course both the US and Russia have 'reserved' their right to make claims on it in the future... yea... as if thats a surprise...)
Even the Nazi's have a piece of it... New Swabia... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...wSwabiaMap.jpg |

They had a piece of it
New Swabia was disbanded a long time ago. Also, I really don't see a new Cold War breaking out, seeing how most of the major players are so dependent on each other for their economy. |

The reality is that a military action has no real benefit to anyone. Even if Russia did try to take the north pole's resources by force, it would then have to face a lot of pissed of nations. Lose-lose.
On the flip side, they could just make their entirely legal claims, keep selling us oil and natural gas, and make a buttload of money. Win-win. |
