But this is old news.. I think This was already beeing planned on 2 years ago, and further. Another taskgroup to fill... NRF ( NATO Responce Force ), EUBG ( European Battlegroup ), where wil they stop? To many things to have military personel on a 30 day notice to move.. | |

Just making an ignorant comment on the picture of the C-130 with EUFOR painted on the side.

This is unlikly to go any further without an absolutly massive increase in Europein Defence spending. All EU member states lack the strategic logistical capability to project a larger or more heavily armed force on a global scale. Since WWII they're either relied on the US (NATO members) or the USSR (former Warsaw Pact members) to rapidly ferry large quantities of heavy weapons around. The only nation with even the possiblity of this is France, as they retained capabilited indipentent of the US and the rest of NATO.
Also, the EU has not stanardised any military equipment (unlike NATO, but even NATO members dont pay attention to all STANAGs, for example Germany) and so keeping the current battlegroups properly supplied in the field may be problematic, let alone a larger force intened for direct military confrountation rather than the current idea of peace keepers. I conclude that the EU is unlikly to take over the responsibility of continental defence from the individual national armies and NATO for a good long time. As for the current idea, it seems like a good one to me. However, the problems will arise not only from problems of logistics, but also from restrictions EU nations tend to place on thier troops in areas of potential or actual conflict. If they have similar restrictions to, lets say, the Germans in Afghanistan, they probubly wont do much good. |

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Just a shame that before they can use the troops, they have to go through a months long debate...
