Raid in Iraq that killed 4 soldiers may be boldest yet

BAGHDAD, IRAQ — In perhaps the boldest and most sophisticated attack in four years of warfare, gunmen speaking English, wearing U.S. military uniforms and carrying American weapons abducted four U.S. soldiers last week at the provincial headquarters in the Shiite holy city of Karbala and then shot them to death.

The U.S. military confirmed a report earlier Friday by the Associated Press that three of the soldiers were dead and one was mortally wounded with a gunshot to the head when they were found in a neighboring province, about 25 miles from the compound where they were captured. A fifth soldier was killed in the initial attack on the compound.

The new account contradicted a U.S. military statement Jan. 20, the day of the raid on an Iraqi governor's office, that five soldiers were killed "repelling" the attack.

In a statement issued late Friday, the military said two of the soldiers were handcuffed together in the back seat of a sport utility vehicle near the southern Iraqi town of Mahawil. A third dead soldier was on the ground nearby. The fourth died on the way to the hospital.

The brazen assault, 50 miles south of Baghdad, was conducted by nine to 12 gunmen posing as a U.S. security team, the military confirmed. The attackers traveled in black GMC Suburbans — the type used by U.S. government convoys — had American weapons, wore new U.S. military combat fatigues, and spoke English, according to senior U.S. military and Iraqi officials.

None of the U.S. or Iraqi officials would allow use of their names because of the sensitive nature of the information.

A senior Iraqi military official said the sophistication of the attack led him to think it was the work of Iranian agents in conjunction with Iraq's Shiite Mahdi Army militia, which Iran funds, arms and trains.

But we should listen to Baker and negiotiate with the Iranians .....right ?
This means they are losing and they know it.
The Iranians are testing our will and escalating the conflict to support the Dems effort to cut and run.
The Iranians are going to put everything they have into the next 6-8 months to push the image of the war as a losing battle.
We will start capturing more and more Iranian mil advisors as we go into the summer and watch how the media portrays them as concerned citizens who joined the insuregency out of a sense of duty, rather than the truth.
We have gotten another Vietnam echo here as a third nation is beginning to have troops on the ground in this conflict.
Can we expect to see Iranian flags at the peace protests now ?

nothing would make you happier either.

after all, what would you bitch about then?

This is a terribly shocking story, and clearly shows how Western Militaries must never underestimate the """"average"""" human!
I feel very sorry for botht he soldiers, their families and their friends, ever more so, due to the nature of the attack.

glassing, and what may that be now?
In my view, diplomancy shoudl be used to the max, the point where the enemy troop are by your countries borders or similar!
Only then can a war be even considered possibly "just" or "right" or more reasonalby a "neccessary", before that, in my op, it is just a crime.

It's funny, in countries with less prevelant media sources(like Iran or Iraq) you expect the people there to believe the only story/information they receive Funny thing is, the same thing happens here in the US, but by choice. People choose a media/information outlet that suites their agenda or desires and makes no effort to examine alternate opinions.

Example:
If Jack Black is funny, then Jack Black is smart. If Jack Black is smart, then I must follow his political views.

Interesting.. I honestly believe the Iranians need to be dealt with face to face.. With a couple thousand JDAMs pointing in there face.. These partied talks don't work obviously. Yes you will see an increase in violence from now till the 08 elections.. Trying to get the American public against the Conflict in Iraq. Hell the 30,000 americans that anti-war protested in DC the other week spit on and threw rocks at american veterans that were anti-anti-war protesting(as the news explained, by anti-anti I mean, they were marching peacefully in support of the war and the troops). Which I think is asinine and if I had the chance I would bitch slap and shoot every single one of those 30,000 people. There a disgrace to the American population and are hurting the military personell.. I hope and pray(I'm not a religious person) that this shit doesn't turn into another Vietnam in the way American troops were greeted on the way back to the states..
