While the lack of a minimap certainly improves the realism of the game, I am of the opion that it sacrifices a little too much in terms of gameplay.

With each new version of PR the bar for admittance is being raised higher and higher. With the lose of the minimap it now becomes that much harder for a new player to get the experience required to enjoy the PR experience.

If we forget for a momment that having a minimap on screen is not very realistic (not to say that a full sized map that also displays the location of all his team mates is very realistic either) then we can ask ourselves: factoring in the new spotting system, what kind of advantage is left for the minimap to give players except the ability to safely locate their team mates, and I don't see how that can be anything but a good thing for gameplay.

And besides, without the minimap, that brand new spotting system the DEV's worked so hard on is practically going to waste as the only people who will be looking at spots are people in vehicles or people who are dead and waiting to respawn... and those people will then relay that information to their living squad mates... and how realisitic is that?

My only problem without it is with the game it is hard to tell other squads things without using the text chat, and I hate typing. I am having fun with my friends in teamspeak though. I think it probably is just a growing pain for me and I will probably adjust just fine.

I didn't want it to go.
I'm glad it's gone. I'm scared, I have no sense of where I am, I want to stay in a pair at least - even within squad maneuvers, just so I've got someone covering my back.
Sounds like a more realistic battlefield experience to me.
Need a map? Change 3d Map to Alt Gr and Large map to Alt.

I would like to see the minimap brought back, and here is why:

In RealLife, I'm not sharing one channel with 5 other guys constantly talking over one another. When I'm with a squaddie I can talk to him and him alone, and point and describe what it is I'm looking at very quickly, all the while everyone else in the squad are capable of talking amongst one another as well. If I come up on someone from another unit, I can talk to them individually as well, I don't have to stop and type stuff out word by word.

In RealLife, I can turn my head independent of my body, and I can see out the corners of my eyes and keep track of where my squad members are. Left and right limits are established during an OPORDER so that we know who is operating where. We have set movement formations and established responses for different threats.

There is a great deal more planning and procedures in a RL operation, 10-15 minutes of briefing and rehearsal just to move 200m to contact, commo, and recon. You can't just throw a bunch of random people in a squad and expect them to know proper procedures and work together, especially when half of you don't even speak the same language or even have a mic. I think the minimap made up for some of this lack of "training and support".

I miss the minimap, too. It's realistic like deploying rallypoints, so what? In reallife, in the army whatever you know how your squadmates are moving (trainings, instructions drills..), theres no game who will simulate that, but a minimap can help pressing forward in the right way. now ive bounded "m" to my 4th mouse button (semi colored map) to bypass the minimap. not funny and realistic.

what is realistic? what unrealistic things should be in the game to do it a bit realistic. my opinion: a "reduced" minimap, where you only can see the living squadmates. full stop.

You People who want the mini map back DEPEND on the mini map be your main point of view. You run around looking at your mini map looking for enemies to shoot and when u find them, then you would look at your actual view. The mini map has become such a bad habit for players and it caused them depend on knowing exactly were they are. You must become INDEPENDENT with just your soldiers view and the caps lock map when it comes to navigation.

All of you who keep saying, ohh.. mini map represents awareness and training and because without the mini map i cant know exactly where i am. But thats the point, you are not supposed to know where you are exactly by moving your eye to the top right corner of your screen.

The main problem of the game is the players. They are so resistant to change and become obnoxious when it comes to learning especially when it come to video games. They feel afraid when they lose something that they have depended on, so they come on the forums to complain. Some of your examples are very valid but that doesn't excuse the lack of effort to adapt to the alternate solutions that the devs have cooked up.

Accept change.

This is the problem... press your M key and have your map appear instantly when you're hiking through the woods in full combat gear!!! NO YOU CAN'T!!! but what you can do is pull it out in a second and look at it to position your troops (learn 6 figure grid references).

If we get some accurate NATO style maps then land features will be much easier to find.
I know satillite photos are cool but its pants :P We can see the map on the ground, meanwhile no the minmap is gone we need a real map that's going to give us instant, useful, usable information on our surroundings e.g. sheer cliffs, marshland etc. land features that are important to coordinating assaults, ambushes and attacks everything that has been lost by guiding a green dot to a flag.

Just let it go man... thats it.. release the 4th mouse button and let the minimap slip into unconciousness and focus on what's in front of you... the hand of jesus (Your SL) will guide you unto your target loyal and true...
I wouldnt think you hold a map in front of your face whenever you step outside... however you...

No more lil green dots sprinting through fields "together" then all dropping, doing some point n click kills and running in.

YOU AREN'T DOTS ANYMORE YOU'RE SOLDIERS!!!!!!

Seems PR now needs thinking before shooting and lotsa people don't like this...

I don't see the problem. You still got the M map it just takes 2 more sec to look at that.

No

You can't follow your squad leader effectively if you get killed and end up spawning way in back or at a rally point a good ways back.

Seeing as your not being briefed for ten minutes before a mission and all sorts of other things listed I don't see anything wrong with the mini-map.

Good idea about setting up the map key to one of my mouse buttons however.
