This scenario exactly matches my issue. Here are my specs:

EVGA nForce4 SLI X16 motherboard
Athlon FX-55 Processor 2600
EVGA 7800GT Video Card 256MB DDR3
Creative Audigy2 Soundcard
2 Gigs Kingston DDR 400 HyperX Ram
Viewsonic 22" LCD
Windows XP Home SP2

In Game Settings:

VIDEO
1680 x 1050 true widescreen using widescreenfixer
Terrain = High
Effects = High
Geometry = High
Texture = High
Lighting = Medium
Dynamic Shadows = Medium
Dynamic Light = Medium
Anti-aliasing = 2X
Texture Filtering = High
View Distance Scale = 100%

AUDIO
Audio Renderer = Hardware
Sound Quality = High
Enable EAX = Yes
Enable VOIP = Yes

The lock up seems to be random... PR looks and sounds fantastic at these settings - FPS averages around 80. Everything going fine until the video freezes and sound loops. I will need to hit the dreaded reset button to reboot the 'puter.

This has never happened in BF2 vanilla. However, I do remember this happening in Battlefield Vietnam occasionally. That was with an older system but I did have the same Audigy2 card in that system.

Yesterday, I found the link where setting the Sound Quality to medium may cure the problem. I tried it and played for at least 4 hours without issue.

P.S. - Thanks for the best gaming experience I have had yet... looking forward to future releases.

sorry to undercut your thread, jaymz, but it seems that the open al update worked for at least one player to fix his issues:

download this!

a) Rename the OpenAL wrapper BF2OpenAL.dll in your Battlefield2 directory to something like BF2OpenAL.original

b) install the latest Creative OpenAL32.dll (see link above)

c) Copy wrap_oal.dll (version 2.1.8.1) from WINDOWS\system32 to your Battlefield2 directory.
Check with properties that it really is the latest OpenAL library from Creative.

d) Rename the copied file to BF2OpenAL.dll just to finish clean

of course its also always a good idea to have the latest drivers for your sound card installed:

european creative driver download

american creative drivers download

that dont might fix any of your problems, but to have the audioengine updated cant hurt and might be solve some issues.

reducing the sound hardware acceleration in the dxdiag screens is also sometimes a known sound issues fixer..
Thank you [R-DEV]sofad! This is the real fix people. I did the update, and then set my sounds back to HIGH and have been playing for a few days with 6, 7, and 8 hour sessions without any Looping Sound with System Freeze problem or any other problem!

You rock [R-DEV]sofad.

I play for about an hour on any map then I freeze with some sound loops usually a new sound that hasnt been played before like a jet flying by for the first time well into the round.
specs:
p4 3.4 ghz
BFG Geforce 6600
integrated audio
2gb of ram

settings:
1280x960@60hz
Terrain medium
Effects high
Geometry medium
Texture high
Lighting high
Dynamic Shadows high
Dynamic Light high
Anti-aliasing 2X
Texture Filtering High
View Distance Scale 100%

I used to play on software/high but then i found out you only change your sound settings in vBF2 so i changed to hardware/high or ultra high cant remember and eax is enabled. The freeze happens sooner if i dont stop all my processes including explorer.exe before playing and starting fs autostart.

this happened in patch 1.3 also but there were two kinds of freezes, one would start a black screen, then go back into the game like 2 seconds after but the other would be exactly this with no black screen.

hi everybody, i experienced the same weird sound loop bug+crash.
i think i fixed the issue by changing some special settings in my rivatuner's power user menu. indeed it seems there is a conflict between punkbuster scaning the hardware memory and rivatuner (or any other tweaking soft as atitool etc...). if some of you are running such applications in background try to disable them and see if it works. you can also check this page from the guru3d forum, it explains how to set riva tuner to protect him from the shamefully bad programmed punkbuster's scaning process. (quote in the second reply).

lol that's actually my thread :P
yea that fixed the problem for BF2 and CoD4 for me, and then it came back just on BF2, happens once every blue moon, so far no freeze since trying the solution posted above I think.

Actaully you're both wrong, I suggested long before in another thread about this issue that GPU or CPU overclocking programs cause this freeze + sound loop problem.
Sometimes a fix is just one click away from the search function.

Such as this thread:
