Distance based chat

I remember similar idea being suggested before, but what I cant remember is the outcome...

Anyway, here it goes. As you are able to set certain radius for flag capture area and things like that, would it be possible to add certain radius to text chat as well?

Since all voip is hard-coded, our way to communicate with people from other squads is the text. But currently whatever you write in the chat box is seen by whole team, which isnt necessarily a good thing.

What I am after is a new chat option, call it "talk" for example. If you type text in this chat, it could only be "heard" inside the certain radius from the speaking person.

Is such thing possible to code? I'd find it useful time to time, especially when I need transport to some location. Whole team doesnt need to know. This is just a little suggestion to add more "role play" in game.

Button J - chats to the whole server.

Button K - chats to your team.

Button L - chats to your squad.

That kind of thing you mean?

Brother Belcher: "I've never ridden in a cart pulled by cows before."
Captain Keene: "Bullocks, Mr Belcher!"
Brother Belcher: "No, I haven't, honestly."

I think he means something similar to EAX but with text, if youre too far away you cant hear them.

I dont know, I would say "no do it to voip leave text like secret teamwide communications" but VOIP is hardcoded, and since those with voip would have limitless range it just seems counter productive to make text limited

Epic infraction worthy Sig Created by ETU Robbi, Dam you allll!!!!

What I mean is:

Chat with people within 10m of your position

Example:
Person writes "Hi" using this talk option.

Another player standing 5m from him sees the "Hi" text.
Player standing 15m from the person sees nothing in chat.

I use the 10m just as a example, it probably should be a bit more.

It encourages the use of a mic and using the chain of command to relay information... I dunno though, that seems to be about the only justification.

Well,I think it's already there after a fashion with the differing chat buttons. Can't see it being improved on as the whole game is set up for VOIP anyhow.

But using button L for chat means no-one else on the team can hear you (read it),only your squad which is sort of about only guys near you (your tight knit squad) hearing (seeing) it.

I really can't see how (or why) that would be improved.

Using the in game VOIP plus a Teamspeak channel is the ultimate use of communications for me. (VOIP for your squad, Teamspeak for SL's to talk together)

I never have time to use chat unless I'm dead or doing a boring stake out defence.Hardly ever read it either.Too busy hiding/shooting/stalking/whatever.

Captain Keene: "Bullocks, Mr Belcher!"
Brother Belcher: "No, I haven't, honestly."

well for a start i doubt its possible but even if it was, it is still a online game, removing chat more or less would not be a good thing for it.

"oh crap, I've got to find and get 5m away from the admin to tell him of a TKer!, oh crap, only admin is on the other team! now if i go 5m up to him hes going to knife me!"

So you dont have a problem when you say "APC, move to D4" in team chat, each person driving the APC will start checking who said it, which APC? Eventually all APC's go to D4.

If you read the original post, all voip is hard coded. Being able to talk with other squads is only able to be done by using TEAM chat, which is seen by whole team. Or, as you said, a commander which can ONLY speak to Squad leaders.

How I see this improving the gameplay:

You enter the APC
You use this "Talk" option and say "Drive to D5"
APC driver (Which isnt part of your squad) sees the message, since he is within the hearing range. Other APC drivers around the map dont even know about this since they are far away.
APC moves to D5, and we are happy.

This is just a solution to overcome the flaws of VOIP system. How many times you have had the situation where you NEED to talk with other squad member immediately? Only feasible way so far has been the team chat, which can be seen by everyone in the same team. Or do you seriously think that after watching in what squad he is, you tell the commander to tell the squad leader to tell the squad member that he is a idiot?

Or do you say in team chat that "You are a idiot", then 31 players start to think who's an idiot?

Okay, joking aside.. I hope you get my point.

Consider this for a example, you hunt a civ... If you use this talk function, you can say "Nice Nikes" and the enemy hears it, because he is within the hearing range.

@ Rhino

This wouldnt remove any chats, just add a new option. You could still use the ALL/TEAM/SQUAD chats...

If the APC is 5m away from you you can see who is driving it via there name tag, or if you are in it, press F1 and you will see who is driving it, failing that you can say "APC in *where it is* go to *where you want* please".

How about;

You are ordered to go to D5.Your SL asks for transport over VOIP.The commander uses VOIP to transport SL to get your squad in an APC and take you to D5.

If we didn't have VOIP I'd agree with you.But we do, so I don't.
